The best Pokemon Gym leaders have unique personalities, and Fantina is no exception. Known for giving players an exceptionally difficult battle in Diamond & Pearl, Fantina is the Hearthome City Gym Leader that specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon. Revered by several other NPCs in the games, Fantina is a sophisticated trainer who immigrated from another country to Sinnoh and became a gym leader by intensely studying Pokémon and their movements.

Trainers who somehow beat her in combat can receive the Relic Badge and earn the TM for Shadow Claw. Her talents do not stop in combat, as Fantina masters several other disciplines, including dance, which has earned her the title of “The Alluring, Soulful Dancer”.

Fantina shares a voice actor with Wobbuffet

Although Fantina is given a distinct “voice” in the main Pokemon game series, it can only be heard in the Pokemon anime and Pokemon Masters. In these appearances, she speaks with a French accent, or an English accent in the Japanese and French versions of the anime.

Fantina’s anime voice is provided by Erica Schroeder as Bella Hudson. Schroeder also voiced Nurse Joy, Wobbuffet, and Bianca in the anime. In Pokemon Masters, Fantina is voiced by Karen strassman, who is fluent in French and has a long career in anime dubbing.

Fantina was massively nervous

The battle against Fantina in Pokemon Diamond & Pearl

While Fantina is sadly difficult in his early appearances, the same cannot be said of his battle in Pokemon Platinum. During the development of Platinum, many NPC Trainer teams were modified from Diamond & Pearl to create an improved leveling curve.

This change greatly affected Fantina’s team and the gymnasium’s leading position as she was the fifth gymnastic battle when it first appeared, and was demoted to third in Platinum. All of the Pokémon on his team lost around ten levels, and his Gengar was even changed to Haunter, while Drifblim was replaced by Duskull.

Fantina could be from Kalos … or not

When players first challenge Fantina, she makes it clear that she is not from Sinnoh. Although she does not specify where exactly she came from, her frequent use of French expressions could imply that she is from Kalos, a Pokémon region based on the north of France.

However, Fantina is not present in Pokemon X & Y (the games in which the region appears) and no NPC ever references it. In the Japanese and French versions of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Fantina uses instead english expressions in her speech, which could mean that she comes from Unova, Alola or Galar.

Fantina owns a legendary Pokémon

Along with the other leaders of Sinnoh Gym, Fantina returns to fight the players in Pokemon Black 2 and White 2’s Pokemon World Tournament. She is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to participate in The Battle Between Legendary Pokemon, a download tournament that became available to Japanese players in September 2012 and was never released in North America. In this tournament, Fantina uses Giratina, the legendary Pokemon Platinum mascot.

This in itself is an incredible feat, as it makes her canonically one of only four Gym Leaders own such a legendary in games. The impossible part of this, however, is that Giratina appears in her original form in the tournament, without being in the warp world or holding the required gray orb.

Fantina is a competition master

While a loss at the hands of Fantina at Hearthome Gym can be devastating, there are still more ways Fantina can crush players. The first time players meet her in Pokemon Platinum, she finds herself sitting in the lobby of the Contest Room, where she reveals that she is participating in some great contests.

She doesn’t just talk either: Fantina will face the player once they unlock the Master Rank contests. Here she uses her Drifblim, nicknamed Loony, which experiences a variety of moves in different categories of appeal. Winning against Fantina in the Master Rank contest will earn the player a star on their trainer card and a Master Rank ribbon.

Fantina’s name has interesting origins

Fantina is phonetically derived from the word ghost in English, although it can also allude to tango fantasy, a sub-genre of tango dance. Both names would make sense with Fantina’s portrayal as a Ghost-type user and skilled dancer.

In German, its name is Blade, which comes from Lamia, a child-eating monster and a spirit that haunts the night in Greek mythology. Lamia is used today as a bogeyman in Greece to make children behave lest she eat them. In Japanese, Fantina’s name is Melissa, which is a common Western name that is said to essentially bolster her status as an alien in Japan.

Fantina’s Signature Pokémon Varies

Mismagius as he appears in the Pokemon anime

In all of Fantina’s appearances, she is known for use Mismagius as a signature Pokémon, despite the fact that her dress incorporates the design of Drifblim. This could be due to the fact that she uses Drifblim by participating in contests.

Her Pokemon ace is usually sent last in her first gym battles and is always portrayed as female, except in the Pokemon World Tournament, where Pokemon sexes are randomized. Fantina forms a synchronized pair with Mismagius in Pokemon Masters, and reveals that Misamagius is trained to dance alongside him as well. He still knows the Shadow Ball movement.

Fantina is a busy woman

Outside of Pokémon battles, contests, and dancing, Fantina has even more hobbies, making her one of the most versatile gym leaders in the Pokémon world. She’s so busy that she doesn’t even show up at Hearthome Gym the first time players meet him in Diamond & Pearl.

When she has time to visit the player’s villa at Platinum, Fantina will notice that she is a member of the Ribbon Union, an elite company located in the resort area that requires at least ten different types of ribbons to enter. An NPC also mentions that Fantina is a regular at the Lost Tower on Route 209, a resting place for Pokemon in the Sinnoh region.

Fantina also owns a non-Sinnoh Pokémon

Although Fantina owns lots of Sinnoh Pokémon, she also has some Hoenn and Unova. While Gengar is originally from Kanto, their pre-evolved form Gastly can be captured at several locations in Sinnoh.

In Pokemon Platinum, Fantina uses a Banette in her revenge on the battlefield, although it is not clear whether this is Hoenn or Route 225, which is considered outside of Sinnoh. In the Type Expert tournament in Pokemon Black 2 & White 2, Fantina uses a Jellicent of random gender, which means he can appear either pink or blue.

Fantina is a dedicated Dahlia fan

Fantina can only be seen in the resort area for the Ribbon Syndicate and the Survival Zone for the Battlefield, but there’s a good chance she has been to the Combat Zone as well. During one of her visits to the player’s villa in Pokemon Platinum, Fantina will be talking about Arcade Star Dahlia, the frontier mastermind of the battle arcade.

Although Fantina makes it clear in Pokemon Masters that she is trained in ballet dancing, she seems to enjoy Dahlia’s more exotic moves. ” You ! Have you met Dahlia? she asks. “She from the Battle Arcade?” This woman ! The way she dances! Especially the way she squirms! Ooh la la! I love his style!
