Bingara’s Roxy Theater is well known for its remarkable resurrection which saw the faithfully restored theater reopen to the public after having been dormant for over forty years. The latest Roxy revival is eerily reminiscent of that era.
After two difficult years of COVID-19 closures and restrictions, The Roxy Theater is slowly emerging rejuvenated and revived with an exciting lineup full of shows and events.
Kicking off this year’s program is the highly anticipated production of “Oliver Twist” presented by the Roxy’s resident theater ensemble, the Northwest Theater Company (NWTC).
After a false start in August last year that saw the show’s opening night abruptly cut short by instant lockouts, the NWTC is thrilled to finally bring the production to life.
‘Oliver Twist’ producer Robyn Phillips says that after a long period of uncertainty, the company is delighted to finally be able to bring the show to life.
“So much hard work has been put in by the cast and crew, many of whom are young people. It was devastating that the show was canceled at the last hour,” she said.
“Thankfully, our enthusiasm and love for live theater is stronger than ever. We can’t wait for the show to see the light of day and for audiences to finally return to The Roxy.”
Oliver Twist will be presented the weekends of March 19-20 and 26-27.
Oliver is just one of many gripping and thrilling performances to hit the Roxy stage this year.
Highlights include July’s performance of “This is Eden.”
Winner of the 2018 Drama Victoria Award, This is Eden is an extraordinary story of female rebellion and survival. Audiences will be transported to the infamous 1839 Cascades Female Factory in Tasmania, where in a solitary cell Mary Ford was left for dead, 10,000 miles from her home. Here, she plots an escape and reveals, with biting mockery, the untold stories of her captors.
Later in the year, the comedy “Men Like Us” will delight audiences with its breathtaking performance.
From the creators of nationally acclaimed ‘Women Like Us’, two of Australia’s top comedians – Lindsay Webb and Dan Willis – explore the lives of fathers, funny men and actors. This show is hilarious, irreverent and adorably hysterical!
In May, the Roxy will hit the road with a ‘Roxy on Tour’ production which will see the cabaret show ‘The Soul’ performed live at Croppa Creek Hall.
This hour-long cabaret is packed with humor, original songs, a belly-dancing break, and even sneaky stripping down to your underwear – because what’s cabaret without it? Audiences are taken on a “train journey” as Laura addresses the pressures of perfection, anxiety and modern life in our technology-fueled world.
The ‘Roxy on Tour’ shows are a way of bringing a small part of the Roxy Theater to some of Gwydir’s smaller communities, ensuring that all residents of the Shire have access to cultural events despite great distances.
The youngest of the family are not forgotten with four high quality productions that will excite the imagination of young and old alike. In May, Puppets, Music and Magic bring life lessons to the stage with “Beep”.
Later in the year, “The Owl’s Apprentice” combines puppet show and physical comedy in a family-friendly tale to be shown in August and in September, the Roxy will host not one, but two sensational children’s shows “Snow White and the Seven Cool Guys” and “The Box Show”.
Roxy Management is delighted to welcome the public back to the theater and remind customers that attending a Roxy show is a great way to use their Dine and Discover vouchers, which can still be used for all Roxy shows until as of June 30, 2022.
The recently launched Good Parents NSW will also be accepted.
