Disclaimer to present THE WAY WE WERE 4.0

THE WAY WE WERE invites a host of talented alternative comedians, musicians, artists, writers, actors and cabaret stars to respond to a past performative video with a newly premiered short performance. An entertaining evening of performance aimed at synthesizing the past and the present!

Inspired by series creator and host Jill Pangallo’s own VHS series, full of cringe-chocking teenage antics, THE WAY WE WERE examines the performer’s relationship to her younger, digitized self and seeks to find currents of continuity between past and present artistic practices. Angsy, funny, sincere, sad, happy – and at times a mind-boggling combination of all of the above emotions – these early videos carry seeds of ideas and conventions used in the now-perfected works of these artists.

“The Way We Were is an inspiring and imaginative project that gives audiences an intimate look into the creative underpinnings of individual performers. As an audience member, I’m often surprised and moved by reflection videos: they consistently reveal true motivations and risks taken by artists who see glimpses of their professional work in moments of their past. ” – Kiara Downey (theater educator, audience member)
