The dirt was ceremoniously moved on Friday to mark the start of construction on what will become the Deer District’s new nine-story hotel located directly north of the Fiserv Forum.

Milwaukee Trade, planned as a 205-room boutique hotel, will be built at the corner of Juneau and Vel R. Phillips avenues in downtown Milwaukee.

Andy Inman, vice president of development at North Central Group, a Madison-based project developer, traced the hotel’s origins to a conversation with executives at Milwaukee Bucks two years ago. Soon after, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down businesses across the country and disrupted the hospitality and sports industry.

Project managers at the groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the start of construction as a testament to the team’s perseverance.

“It would have been very easy for us to fold up our tents, stop and wait until we live another day,” said Inman. “But that’s not what we do. It’s not what we do as Milwaukeeans, it’s not what we do as Wisconsinites. Instead, we moved forward.

In building the hotel, the Bucks and NCG predict a rebound in the hotel market by the end of construction in early 2023.

The Trade will feature 205 tech-equipped rooms and suites, which will have a private elevator and hotel entrance, as well as high ceilings for tall visitors, Inman said. The two-story VIP suite will have its own private access.

The hotel will also include over 9,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space and two restaurants, including an exclusive concept on the southeast corner of the first floor, which will be “where it is. have to be “on game night,” Inman said. . A rooftop restaurant and lounge will offer city views. The retail space will be located on the southwest corner of the first floor.

The project is expected to create 750 jobs during construction. Once opened, the hotel will employ approximately 150 people.

The trade will be under the Marriott International Autograph collection, a group of independent hotels known for their upscale accommodation and design. The name is a tribute to the traders who built the city of Milwaukee.

The Bucks said the Marriott would be the first of two hotels they would like to develop in the Deer District. The other would probably take over part of the old Bradley Center site, south of the Fiserv Forum.

“Throughout the playoffs, the world has watched the Deer District become one of the most exciting places they’ve ever seen and we want to keep it that way. Trade will help, ”Bucks chairman Peter Feigin said.
